2011 Napa Valley Zinfandel winemaking: "I strive to make a Zinfandel that showcases the complex fruit and spice flavors of this varietal. We pick the fruit when it obtains optimal flavor ripeness, but before the sugar spikes to levels that impact the final alcohol balance. I take a gentle approach; destemming the fruit without using a crusher to make sure there is no harsh seed tannin. We ferment the wine at temperatures warm enough to coax out all the berry and spice flavor yet assuring the fermentation will finish without a lot of residual sugar. The wine is then aged in Burgundian barrels that offer subtle spice without overpowering the intense fruit character." Winemaker, Elaine St. Clair roots: The 2010 vintage is from the Lazar Vineyard located above the valley floor on the east side of Mt. George. The soils are gravely and well-drained. The warm summer days on Mt. George are cooled by the dramatic fog banks that pour over the palisades above the vineyard causing mid-afternoon breezes that moderate the warmer inland temperatures. aromas: blackberry, pomegranate, black current jam, candied walnuts, dark chocolate, black pepper, clove, nutmeg, vanilla palate: elegant layered flavors, concentrated fruit and spice, round structure, subtle tanninsstatistics: Lazar Vineyard, 170 cases produced, barrel aged 10 months in Burgundian barrels Printable Version
